A stiff carbon sole and a pair of BOA dials β the two things that separate a proper road shoe from an expensive slipper.
A flexible sole wastes energy: the shoe bends instead of the pedal turning. The full carbon sole here has a stiffness index of 10, so what you put in comes out at the crank. The trade-off is that these are not shoes to walk far in β that is the honest truth about every serious road shoe.
Two independent BOA dials let you tension the forefoot and midfoot separately, and both adjust in either direction while you ride. The perforated upper drains and breathes, which matters more than it sounds like it does in an Armenian summer.
